On Dec 28, 1897, 70 of the friends and relatives of the Rev Allen Brooner and his wife, met at their home one mile east of Dale, Ind., to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their marriage. Father Brooner is in his 84th year and Mother Brooner is in her 77th year. He was a playmate of Abe Lincoln in their boyhood at Lincoln City. He related the following to the writer, which may be of interest to some.

"At the time of Grandma Brooner's sickness, Lincoln's mother visited her. At least Grandma told her she was going to die. Mrs. Lincoln said 'don't talk that way for I may die before you.' Sure enough, she died 2 weeks before. They lay beside each other inside the same railing at Lincoln City. Father Brooner visited Lincoln while he kept post office in Illinois. A woman brought some postage stamps and after she had gone Lincoln discovered that she had given him 5 cents too much. Early next morning he walked over 2 miles to give back the 5 cents.

All present enjoyed themselves and were delighted to see father and mother Brooner so cheerful and hopeful of the bright future. May their pathway up to glory be one of praise and delight, is the prayer of all.

8 "All About the Justs"

The First Generation

Andrew Just was my grandfather. His parents Florian and Menga named him Andreas and he Americanized his name to Andrew. He was the second child of the couple. He was four years old when his parents immigrated to America. He lost his father within a few months after their settlement in or near Holton, Kansas. His mother married Andrew Hill after his father died. Andrew Hill and Menga had four children. It was in the Andrew Hill family that Andrew Just grew up. Not much is known about Andrew's life as a child. However, we do know that after he reached adulthood he was employed by the railroad. He moved to Solomon, Kansas, as a requirement of his employment with the railroad.

It was in Solomon that he met my Grandmother Jessie "Anna" Cobler, who was born and raised in Solomon. They were married on February 16,1879 . They produced eight children, Oscar "Orval," Curtis "Earl," Myrtle "Maude," Andrew "Mearl," Amelia Edna "Millie," walter Paul "Jim," Frank Alva, and Roy. They became the first generation of Americans of the Swiss Just family.

Andrew's job required that he move to Salina, Kansas, sometime after 1893 and before 1897. Andrew's family lived on north Tenth street. The house faced west. The backyard extended to Ninth street to the east. The house is gone now, having been destroyed when a highway by-pass was constructed, but a large tree that was in the backyard remains.

Andrew died before I was born so I have no memory of him. However, everyone that I spoke with that knew him remembers Andrew as a kind and gentle person. My brother Jack recalls Andrew sitting in his back yard feeding robins from his hand. One robin would approach, take grain from his hand and move off. Then another robing would repeat the routine.

Andrew was obviously a busy man. If he wasn't at work he was tending his garden or doing other chores. He usually wore his railroad attire which consisted of a work shirt and overalls. He had a large garden in his back yard which he attended to regularly. The family had a horse which he had trained to walk down between the rows of the garden without stepping on a plant. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad handling various duties. He did some farming and will drilling. He also worked in a flour mill. On occasion he rode the horse to work. Usually, however, the horse pulled a wagon and was a form of family transportation. The family also had a cow and chickens which was customary at the time. The cow, chickens and garden produced a substantial amount of food for the large family. Andrew enjoyed his family and was very proud of them. It was at this location that he and Jessie's children grew up.

There is somewhat of a mystery about Andrew's life after reaching adulthood but prior to his marriage to Jessie. He had previously married a lady in Holton, Kansas who died during childbirth. It is assumed that the child died as well. During my research I reviewed a book which was located at the Memorial Library of Holton, Kansas. The author had visited every cemetery in Jackson County, Kansas, and recorded the names on the tombstones. There was an "Andrew Just" listed in the book as being buried in the Brick cemetery south of Holton approximately six miles. The dates on the stone were very obliterated so we don't have that information. I visited the site of the cemetery but I could not find the stone. It was a very small cemetery and most of the grave sites were without markers. Could this have been the son of our Andrew Just? I believe so. According to the groundskeeper the records for the cemetery have been lost or misplaced. I have researched newspaper obituaries at the Kansas Historical Museum. However, I have found nothing with respect to this particular Andrew Just. For the time being it will remain a mystery. I did not find anything concerning Florian Just or Menga Hill.

All of Andrew's children reached adulthood and their portraits are displayed on the following pages preceded by a family portrait of Andrew, Jessie and four of their children.

15 "These Pioneer Women"
by Mrs. Ella Horak

Mrs. Martha Brooner

Mrs. Brooner is a spry little woman. To see her about her daily routine one would never suspect she is so near her 85 th birthday. She uses glasses for reading and close work, hears well and seems as well contented as a school girl.
She is the widow of Henry Brooner who joined the Union Army in Indiana in 1861 and served until the close of the war. He died April 6, 1906 at the age of 66.
Mrs. Martha Brooner was born in Taylorville, Warwick County, Indiana, December 4, 1953. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Uriah McCoy and the eldest of a family of ten children, six of whom survive, five living in Indiana.
Martha McCoy spent her girlhood days at Taylorville. She had little opportunity for an education. she recalls of having attended school for about three months but we are sure she made good use of the three "R's". Especially is this true in reading as she was advanced to the fifth reader. Her early life was spent in the home, learning the arts of a real homemaker.
She became skillful with the cards, spinning wheel and loom. She says she spun both wool and cotton and knitted her own stockings when a little girl. As she grew older she learned to weave linsey-wolsey to make her own dresses and petticoats. She helped her her mother spin and weave flax to make table linens. She afterwards used these arts in her own home.
Martha McCoy was married at the age of 21 to Henry Brooner, May 10, 1874. The wedding ceremony was performed in the home of her parents and the officiating minister was Rev. Moore, a Methodist minister.
Mr. and Mrs. Brooner moved to Illinois in 1875. They lived in Illinois until 1886, when they loaded the big covered wagon and came to Howell County, Missouri. Mr. Brooner settled on the Brooner homestead about 1 and a half miles north of Pomona, on what is now Highway 63, the farm where Peck Brotherton now lives.
Mr. and Mrs. Brooner lived on this farm and reared a family of twelve children. All the needs of the family were produced at home. Mother Brooner says "We raised most everything we ate and made our clothes" No doubt the spinning wheel and loom was kept busy. No one knows the joys of such a task but the mother of twelve lively children.
Mrs. Brooner says that when her family was all at home she used to pick a large pail of green butter beans and then all she could carry in her apron for two cookings (dinner and supper), and it took everything else in proportion. But she says she could raise as much in those days on one row as we can now grow on one half dozen such rows. Mr. Brooner in those days kept a sign posted such as "Corn For Sale" or "Hay For Sale" and these products were all produced on the farm. We wonder how many of us today could provide for a family of fourteen and have "Corn For Sale"

Mrs. Brooner's father was a Methodist minister, and she joined the Methodist church when a girl in 1865. After she came to Missouri she united with the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints in 1891, being a charter member of the church in the Halfway community.
The Brooners were known for their great hospitality. Their door was always open to the weary traveler or freighter. They lived on the road from Springfield to West Plains and the early freighters and travelers made the Brooner homestead headquarters and none were ever turned from their door. The ministers and church delegates always stopped with the Brooners. The "latch spring" always hung on the outside of Mother Brooner's home.
Mother Brooner lived in the homestead for several years after the death of her husband in 1906. She finally moved to Pomona for a few years and after her children married she broke housekeeping in about 1925. since that time she visits among her children. She spent most of the summer here with her son and daughter in law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brooner of near Willow Springs, Missouri.
Wherever she goes she mends, darns, and quilts for her children and grandchildren. This last summer she quilted a quilt for Mrs. Harry Brooner. She would rise early in the morning and go to the quilt while Mr. and Mrs. Brooner were out doing their chores. She says it has become too much of a task to piece quilts any more.
Words cannot express the love . pride and ambition Mrs. Brooner has lived for her children. She has been, and is, a guiding star for her children and community. She was ever ready to care for the sick and afflicted and no one was ever turned from her door.
Harry Brooner says of his mother " She was kind , affectionate mother. She made many sacrifices for her children and still denies herself for her beloved children."
We believe; these sainted old mothers contribute their ripe old age to a righteous, temperate living, with plenty of whilesome activity to employ both mind and physical strength.Mother Ogle said "So many people bring on ill health by undue exposure." While Mother Lilly and Mother Brooner did not say so much in exact words, we know they fully sanction Mother Ogle's statement.

Jacob Pie (Pea/Pee) and family lived in Lancaster, Lancaster CO, PA, from 1760-1780 and attended the First Reformed Church of Lancaster. Jacob received land donations in Vincennes, Knox Co, IN, for his military service during the Revolution.
-------------------
Will of Jacob Pea, the Elder:

In the name of God; Amen.

I, Jacob Pea of Knox County, in the territory northwest of the Ohio, Yeoman, being very sick and weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God; calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament; that is to say, principally and first of all. I give and recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in decent Christian burial, at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again, by the mighty power of God - and as touching such wordly estates wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give, demise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form -
First, I give and bequeath to Rachel, my dearly beloved wife, her Bed and bedding, one Cow, and further to be maintained by my son John during life.
Secondly, I give and bequeath to my Son Jacob the sum of five pounds. Virginia currency.
Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my Sons Henry and Daniel five pounds each. Like currency.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my Daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret and Catherine, one Cow, each.
Fifthly, I give and bequeath unto my Son Abraham one half of the Lands.
Lastly, I give and bequeath unto my Son John, whom I likewise constitute make and ordain the sole Executor of this my last will and testament, the other half of the lands which the buildings stand upon, together with the buildings, and all the other estate, freely to be possessed and enjoyed by him. Likewise it is my request that John shall have four years to pay the elder brothers their legacies and as touching those buildings of Peter Frederick's and Daniel Pea's, if they should leave the possession of the land, before ten years from their settlement, and leave their buildings then they shall be paid for their buildings, what two men shall judge reasonable, but should they take their buildings off, then they are to have nothing allowed them.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seals this twenty seventh day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety five.
Signed, Sealed, published, pronounced and declared, by the said Jacob Pea, as his last Will and Testament, in the presence of us Luke Decker, Philip Catt, Reuben Teop.

57 A celebration of life will be held November 12th at 11:00 AM for Andrew J. Cumming, Sr., who passed away in Saratoga on October 24, 2011. Andy was 95 years old and was born as the first of three children in San Bernardino, CA on May 9, 1916 to John and Margaret Cumming of Scotland. He grew up on his family's citrus ranch in Rialto, CA and later attended University of Redlands. Andy married his high school sweetheart and "one and only," Lourene Simmons on October 16, 1938. He later served his country in the 2nd Air Division of the 8th Air Force, 453rd Bomber Group stationed at Old Buckenham, England during WW II. Andy was Crew Chief on the B-24 Liberator named "Arrowhead" (after Lake Arrowhead), which received the distinct honor of being the first plane to fly over 100 trouble-free missions!

After the war, Andy joined Goodyear Tire Company and moved to Santa Barbara. He became a successful sales representative, leaving Goodyear in 1951 to move to San Jose and buy into a General Tire Dealership. Andy teamed up with Bill Henderson to form Cumming-Henderson General Tire which later moved to Santa Clara. It was a successful partnership that lasted many years and was passed down to his children in 1983.

After Andy's retirement, he and Lourene became world travelers, crisscrossing the globe visiting such diverse countries as Yugoslavia, Egypt, New Zealand, and his beloved England and Scotland.

Andy loved classic cars and owned an MGTF, Model T Ford, and his prized 1940 Cadillac that received many awards including "Best of Show". He enjoyed horse packing and fishing trips in the High Sierra with friends and family, and especially loved going to Kennedy Meadows! Andy and his family enjoyed summer and winter vacations at Lake Tahoe which Andy referred to as "lovely, lovely land of the El Teho". He and Lourene taught their children and friends to water ski behind their classic mahogany Chris Craft named "Just Right" and loved snow skiing at resorts all around the lake. As a young couple, Andy and Lourene loved camping in their homemade "teardrop" trailer in Tuolumne Meadows and later introduced his family to the splendors of Yosemite. Andy and his son Jim were very active in the Boy Scouts and Y-Indian Guides, where they were known as "Silver Arrow" and "Swift Arrow".

Andy Cumming served his community and was a member of the Santa Clara Rotary Club, The St. Claire Club, Elks Club, La Rinconada Country Club, Saratoga Presbyterian Church and was a Director at Santa Clara Savings and Loan.

Mr. Cumming is survived by his wife of 73 years, Lourene Cumming of Saratoga, his two daughters: Pamela Regan (Jerry) of Morgan Hill, Janet Pfeiffer (Craig) of Santa Barbara, and his son Andrew J. "Jim" Cumming Jr. (Wendy) of Soquel. Andy also leaves his six beloved grandchildren: Kyle, Melanie, and Kevin Regan, Kristen Pfeiffer, and Ben and Robin Cumming, along with his former daughter-in-law, Nell Cumming. He was laid to rest in a private ceremony with military honors at Madronia Cemetery in Saratoga. Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life at Saratoga Presbyterian Church on 20455 Herriman Ave. Saratoga, CA on November 12 at 11 AM.

The men of the family helped to build the house and received credits towards purchasing the house for their work. Each homestead had 2 acres, a chicken coop, grape arbor, house with 1,2, or 3 bedrooms and a garage. The Trump homestead had an orchard, a huge garden and a creek meandering through the property. Situated near the Community Center, the family enjoyed participating in all the affairs of the community. The family lived there until the time of Clement's death. After his death, Maggie sold the house and moved around among the children until she resided at the Westmoreland Manor in Greensburg, PA where she died.

82 At the turn of the twentieth century, the movement to improve care of those afflicted with epilepsy reached Indiana. In 1905, the Indiana legislature passed an act creating the Indiana Village for Epileptics, thus beginning the segregation of epileptics from the rest of the state's population. Placing epileptics in colonies was considered a progressive solution to a centuries old medical ailment. This thesis will examine the Indiana Village for Epileptics from its inception until the retirement of the first superintendent, Dr. Walter C. Van Nuys. Van Nuys' tenure was so long-he stepped down in 1952-that the Village had become an outdated and unnecessary institution because of advances in medical treatments for the disease. The age of segregation had ended and epileptics were no longer seen as a menace to society.
