207 | Frederick Roots in Indiana Frederick Lindy, is an interesting character because of his service in the Revolutionary War. Born in Prussia, Germany he came to America as a Hessian, a German soldier hired by the British to fight against the Americans. Taken captive during a battle near Charleston, South Carolina, he pledged his allegiance to the Americans while being held prisoner in a house in the basement of Battery Row. Lindy served with the Pennsylvania Continental Line and the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War and was mustered out of Fort Pitt. After settling in Indiana, Frederick Lindy was the man to call if you needed a cabin built. Another family that has interesting links to the Fredericks is the Lindy family. We begin with Frederick Lindy, Sr. Lindy was a Hessian, a member of the German army hired by the British to help in the fight against the Americans. Lindy might have arrived in the Carolinas and fought in a five daylong battle near Charleston. He was reportedly taken prisoner and held in a basement of a mansion on Battery Row. While in captivity he apparently had a change of heart and loyalty and decided to switch sides and fight with the Americans. He lived in what is now South Carolina and served with the Pennsylvania Continental Line and the Pennsylvania Militia. He was paid and mustered out of Fort Pitt. Lindy was married to Catherine and their children were named Catherine, Charity, Abigail (d. 1849), Margaret and Frederick. All of the children are recorded as having been born in Pennsylvania. The Lindy's were in Vincennes, Indiana in 1802 as Frederick Lindy purchased 200 acres at location 9 from Touisssant Du Bois. According to one account, Lindy never felt he was free until after 1812 when the land office opened in Vincennes. He drew #57 of the Vincennes district land. He apparently was good with his hands, as he apparently developed quite the reputation as a cabin builder. He is said to have built as many as five cabins. http://trees.ancestry.com/rd?f=document&guid=4bc09237-e9d4-406b-9708-b18e82df2fb8&tid=10149889&pid=-683830426 | LINDY, Frederick Sr. (I169)

He came to this community with his parents in 1870 where he grew to manhood. He engaged in farming and had lived for the past 32 years on the home place north of Glasco. 215 | Glasco Sun, Feb. 1, 1934, page 1: JOHN DOWNEY PASSES AWAY One of The First Pioneer Settlers In This Community. He Was Nearly 101 Years of Age John Downey The oldest resident of Cloud County, John Downey, passed away Tuesday morning, at 10:00 a.m. Mr. Downey came to the United States in 1849 and was then 16 years of age. Had he lived until the coming March he would have been 101 years old. Mrs. Mary Dillon, a sister of the deceased, also came to this country, in 1862. Mrs. Dillon died in 1930, nearing 90 years of age. They were hardy pioneers of this western country and the early hardships and privations seemed to have but prolonged their lives. Mr. Downey married a Pennsylvania girl of Irish descent, Hanora Hurley, who died February 5, 1922, at 75 years of age. The Dillons and Downeys moved first from Pennsylvania to Iowa, and in 1870 they came overland by wagon train to Glasco where they have resided since. The quarter section where the gas booster station stands was filed on by Mr. Downey who lived on it until 1890, having acquired possession by homestead rights. In 1890 he moved to the Downey farm in Solomon Township where he made his home until his death. History recounts that in the fall of 1869 the last Indian raid passed through this section, consequently it was the following year that this bearded pioneer came to settle and help win the country to civilization. It is interesting to recall the names of the rest of the group that accompanied these early settlers to Kansas, among them Thomas and Pierce Butler, James Hurley, Michael Dillon, William Cuntlin, Michael Kief, Mrs. Mary Cuntlin, and "Grannie" Malone. The early pioneer priests Father Pirriere and Molliere offered Mass in the homes of these early day settlers until a later date when the first Catholic Church was built sometime in the '80s. Mr. Downey leaves 11 children: Mrs. Mary Paul of Kansas City, Mrs. Johanna Loftus and Mrs. Ella Murray of Jamestown, Mrs. Margaret LaRoque of Bradley, Ill., Tom Downey, Mrs. Julia Henry, J.J. Downey, Timothy Downey, Richard Downey and Will Downey of Glasco, and George Downey of Simpson. Four children, Theresa, Eliza Anna and LeNora preceded their father in death. There are 31 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10:00 o'clock Thursday, January 18 at the St. Mary's Church at Glasco, and burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery | DOWNEY, John (I4120)

216 | Glasco Sun, Feb. 10, 1922, page 1: Mrs. John Downey Honora Hurley Downey was born in the year 1848 in County Kerry, Ireland. When but a small child she came to this country with her parents and settled at Shenandoah, Pa. In the year 1864 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Downey the ceremony taking place at Pottsville. In the year 1870 they came to Kansas and homesteaded two miles east of Glasco, where they established a home and started the fight of the pioneer to convert the wilderness of the Solomon into the now fertile Valley. Throughout the years of her life in this community, she not only gave her large family the care and love that they now cherish, but was always ready to render whatever service to her neighbors and friends that they might require. She was a Christian mother, a kind and considerate neighbor, a loving and faithful friend. She gained by her quiet unassuming devotion to her family, and loyalty and service to those about her, the highest regard of the people of this community, and the large concourse of people which attended and the many beautiful flowers bestowed at the funeral service give ample evidence that she was held in that high regard to the last. Mr. Downey was the mother of fifteen children, eleven of whom survive her, Mrs. Mary Paul of Kansas City, Mrs. M. M. Loftus, Mrs. W. L. Murray and Mrs. Joe LaRocque of Jamestown. Mrs. G. F. Henry, Thomas, John, William, Richard, Timothy, and George of Glasco. Four daughters, Theresa, Eliza, Anna and Le Nora predeceased her. She is survived by four sisters and two brothers all of whom reside in Pennsylvania with the exception of one brother, Mr. James Hurley of Glasco. Besides the immediate family she leaves thirty grand children and eight great grand children. Mrs. Downey died Sunday, February 5, 1922, after a short illness with pneumonia. During her illness she had the loving care of her children and the best medical attention but her strength was not sufficient to withstand the attack and she quietly passed away, safe in the knowledge that the life well spent in Christian service would gain its reward. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church at Glasco, Tuesday, February 7, 1922, conducted by Father McErlean, assisted by the Concordia Choir with Requiem High Mass. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery. | HURLEY, Hanora (I4121)

217 | Glasco Sun, Feb. 29, 1940, page 3: Mrs. G.F. Henry A life's mission was fulfilled and brought to a close late Saturday, February 24th, when Mrs. G.F. Henry passed away at their home following a long and critical heart ailment. It is with a great deal of sorrow that we are called on to write the last chapter of this life and a few facts as we knew and loved her. Julia Ann Downey was born at Glasco, Kans., July 17, 1870 to Honorah Hurley and John J. Downey, Sr. and departed this life on Febr. 24, 1940 at the age of 69 years, 8 months and 13 days. She was united in holy bonds of matrimony to George Franklin Henry, November 22, 1897. To this union were born four children: Elsie Benson of Great Bend, Kansas, John of Wichita, Ella Olson of this city and George Franklin, Jr. of Dayton, Ohio. Mrs. Henry was an intelligent honest woman with a keen sense of humor and endowed with the attributes of a kind and loving mother who was tireless in her devotion and work for her family and religion. Her greatest interest in life was her home and family and when her children were with her she worked to make their beautiful home the center of their life and their friends. Even when they grew up and scattered to homes of their own and filled useful places in their communities it was her great joy to have them return to her home; the thirteen grandchildren shared in that love and devotion. Mrs. Henry was also deeply devoted in her religion and to her kind and loving husband. Mrs. Henry leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, her four children and 13 grandchildren, four sisters, Mary Paul, Kansas City; Johanna Loftus, Ella Murray, Jamestown; Mrs. Maggie LaRocque of Kankakee, Ill, and six brothers, Tom, Tim, Richard, John Jr., Will and George, all of Glasco. All that loving hands and hearts could do were done for this wife, mother and sister as the family were ministrants in the home and at the bedside all during the time of the illness. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at St. Mary's Catholic church. Rev. Fr. Bevak sang the Requiem High Mass and Rev. Fr. McErlean of Concordia gave the sermon. Jimmy Olson, a grandson, and Louis Clark were altar boys. The pallbearers were six nephews: Will Murray, Richard Loftus, Wm. Francoeur, Joe Downey, Frances Downey and Abner Herbin. Interment was made in the St. Mary's cemetery. A large host of friends who came to pay their last earthly homage was a tribute of the high esteem and love in which Mrs. Henry and her family are held in this community. The business houses were closed during the funeral in deference to Mr. Henry who has maintained a Glasco business since 1896. 220 | Glasco Sun, Nov. 14, 1940, page 1: The grim reaper, Death, has taken a heavy toll from Glasco the past week and saddened this community and brought sorrow to many hearts by the loss of loved ones. ......then Richard Downey who came to death in the bitter coldness of the sudden storm Sunday evening...... Delphos Republican, Nov. 14, 1940, page 1: IS STORM VICTIM Rich Downey of Glasco Frozen to Death in Snow A victim of the weekend storm of ice and snow which raged here, the body of Richard Downey of Glasco was discovered Monday afternoon in the hedge row along State Highway 9, southwest of Concordia. The body, which was found by Ralph Cly of Concordia while hunting, had evidently laid there since sometime Sunday night. Mr. Cly saw the body lying under the hedge at a corner near the Otis Bland farm on Highway 9. He called Sheriff Jack Cleveland who identified the victim as "Rich" Downey. Coroner C.R. Nelson, of Jamestown, after an examination of the body, said Mr. Downey evidently died from exposure. His clothing had been wet, and was frozen solid, indicating he had been out in the rain and sleet of Sunday evening. Investigating the case, Sheriff Cleveland found Mr. Downey's car about nine miles southwest of Concordia on the Delphos road leading into No. 9, where it had gone into a ditch. He learned at Glasco that Mr. Downey had bought gasoline at a station there about 6 o'clock Sunday evening and had driven east out of Glasco. Evidently his car had gone in the ditch and Mr. Downey had started to walk into town, was overcome by the storm and cold and sought protection in the hedge where his body was found. Mr. Downey is survived by his widow and several brothers and sisters. The funeral was held in Glasco Thursday morning. Concordia Blade-Empire, Nov. 12, 1940 (this article was about the same as the Delphos Republican article, with this addition) ......Mr. Downey, it was estimated, had walked almost seven miles through the storm after he left his car, his body found at the corner, half a mile north of the W.L. Giroux farm. Concordia Blade-Empire, Nov. 13, 1940, page 1: Downey Services Will be Held Thursday at Glasco Funeral services for Richard Downey of Glasco, whose frozen body was found southwest of Concordia Monday afternoon, will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at the Catholic church at Glasco. 242 | History of Knox and Daviess Counties Page 80-81 (1886) Early Settlers. Frederick mehl, or Mail, came to the county while it was in possession of the French and Indians. As the French and Indians fraternized he learned the French language as a matter of protection. He was from Philadelphia and obtained Donation 52, to which Isaac Mehl obtained a deed in 1797. Frederick Mehl was the father of Charles, Isaac, Solomon and Frederick all of whom have been identified with the development of the township. They have all been closely confined to agricultural pursuits. George Catt, grandfather of J. Pm Catt, came from North Carolina to Virginia; thence to Knox County and settled on an old French claim, lying immediately east of Purcell Station. He came all the way from Virginia in a wagon bringing his family with him. George Catt, son of the former, was born about 1800, and settled on a portion of the land owned by his father. He was a ranger in time of the Indian war, but was not at the battle of Tippecanoe. He was a farmer and miller. Moses Catt, brother of George Catt, was never the owner of land, was somewhat given to bibulous habits. He lived in the "barrens" in the western part of the township. "Boss" Catt went to New Orleans and was lost sight of by his friends. Isaac Catt, brother of J. P. Catt, lived west of the railroad. He owned a small tract of land, but depended mainly on his gun for a living. He killed great numbers of deer and turkey. Other of the Catt brothers were Solomon and Hiram, the former died in Harrison Township; the latter is still living near the old farm of the grandfather. | Family (F741)

264 | In the summer of 1859 typhoid fever, a disease caused by contaminated food or drinking water, claimed the lives of Michael and his wife. Mary, 63, had been sick for most of the summer, about 60 days before she died in August. Her husband died on September 1st, after being sick just six days. Upon Michael's death his possessions were sold at auction. There are very familiar names among the list of those that attended. A look at the items sold gives a clue to what life must have been like here in the mid 1800s. There are the tools, plows, hoes and hayforks you would expect a life long farmer to have. There were household items like a clock, coffee mill, bureau and bedding. There was also a jar of lard, jugs of blackberries, a stew pot, tallow and a barrel of salt. There were five head of sheep, 12 geese, 9 turkeys, a cow, steer, sow and pigs and a mare. Among Michael's outstanding debts was a bill from Dr. Robert W. Phillips. According to his bill, a visit from the doctor would cost $1, sometimes a $1.50. A visit in the night would cost $2. Coffins for the couple were purchased from John M. Edwards at a cost of $12 each. | Family (F9535)

It was raised to serve on the western border in the event of Indian trouble, but if no trouble, to go where ever needed. It served entirely in the West, doing duty at Ft. Pitt and Ft. McIntosh and along the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers. Col. William Crawford lived on the site of New Haven, opposite Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on the Youghiogheny River.
