Whether it was the death of their young daughter or other factors, it became clear that things were not good between the couple and the marriage ended when Beth left Carl for another man. The story goes that their daughter Catherine was clinging to her mother's dress (apron) crying and begging her mother not to go. It apparently did not do any good and the Carl and his daughter were left to fend for themselves.
