- Services for Virgil H. Mattingly, 99, Edgewood, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Allan Fuller Funeral Home chapel, Wills Point, with Don Mattingly and the Revs. Scott Brown and Jim Ballard officiating.
Burial will be in Grove Hill Memorial Park, Dallas.
Mr. Mattingly died Feb. 13, 2007, in a Grand Saline nursing home.
He was born Jan. 7, 1908, in Mount Vernon to the late Augustus and Mae Armstrong Mat-tingly. He grew up and graduated from high school in Mount Vernon and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Texas State University, where he was on the football team and in the band. He was a schoolteacher in Rockwall Independent School District and at Yorktown, where he was football coach. He was also a coach at Forest Avenue High School, and later taught at W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas, retiring in the late 1970s. He moved to Edgewood in 1991. He was a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruby Nell Mattingly on Jan. 25, 2005; son, Joe Pat Mattingly, in 2002; brothers, Raymond Mattingly, T.B. Mattingly and Bert Mattingly; and sister, Mary Francis Lamb.
Survivors include son, Jack V. Mattingly, Edgewood; daughters, JaNelle Erickson, Littleton, Colo., and Joy Nassour, Austin; brothers, Murl Glen Mattingly, Houston, and Norman Mattingly, Mount Pleasant; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
If desired, memorials may be made to charity of choice.
