Mrs. John Downey
Honora Hurley Downey was born in the year 1848 in County Kerry, Ireland. When but a small child she came to this country with her parents and settled at Shenandoah, Pa.
In the year 1864 she was united in marriage to Mr. John Downey the ceremony taking place at Pottsville. In the year 1870 they came to Kansas and homesteaded two miles east of Glasco, where they established a home and started the fight of the pioneer to convert the wilderness of the Solomon into the now fertile Valley. Throughout the years of her life in this community, she not only gave her large family the care and love that they now cherish, but was always ready to render whatever service to her neighbors and friends that they might require. She was a Christian mother, a kind and considerate neighbor, a loving and faithful friend. She gained by her quiet unassuming devotion to her family, and loyalty and service to those about her, the highest regard of the people of this community, and the large concourse of people which attended and the many beautiful flowers bestowed at the funeral service give ample evidence that she was held in that high regard to the last.
Mr. Downey was the mother of fifteen children, eleven of whom survive her, Mrs. Mary Paul of Kansas City, Mrs. M. M. Loftus, Mrs. W. L. Murray and Mrs. Joe LaRocque of Jamestown. Mrs. G. F. Henry, Thomas, John, William, Richard, Timothy, and George of Glasco. Four daughters, Theresa, Eliza, Anna and Le Nora predeceased her. She is survived by four sisters and two brothers all of whom reside in Pennsylvania with the exception of one brother, Mr. James Hurley of Glasco. Besides the immediate family she leaves thirty grand children and eight great grand children.
Mrs. Downey died Sunday, February 5, 1922, after a short illness with pneumonia. During her illness she had the loving care of her children and the best medical attention but her strength was not sufficient to withstand the attack and she quietly passed away, safe in the knowledge that the life well spent in Christian service would gain its reward.
Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church at Glasco, Tuesday, February 7, 1922, conducted by Father McErlean, assisted by the Concordia Choir with Requiem High Mass. Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.
