Celia was much opposed to these stories, as the four girls, Olive, Lola, Edith and Edna would all be to scared to
go to bed and would all be in bed with dad when Celia came up to go to bed. Alfred worked as a telegrapher
for the Union Pacific Railroad. He also worked at the Boys Industrial School teaching printing. In 1904 Alfred
and Celia purchased the 'Hohneck House' a Bavaria, KS. landmark (then, it doesn't exist today). They used it
as their home and as a restaurant/hotel. By 1907, (another record says 1905), they moved to Salina, KS .. and
purchased the 'Pacific House', which was at the time a well known and popular hotel/restaurant and continued
their home/restaurant business. Alfred took care of the children while Celia would over see the work and close
the Hotel and cafe for the night. They moved to Kansas City, Kansas in 1912. Alfred's obituary states that he
was a night watchman at the Griffin Wheel Company for 20 years prior to his retirement in 1935. Funeral
records show he died at St. Mary's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 71. The primary cause of
death was pulmonary edema and the secondary cause was a strangulated hernia. Notes from Ceila's bible state
that he died from a hernia operation at St. Mary's hospital, Kansas City, MO. His address at the time of death
was 206 No. Valley, Kansas City, KS. This was the same house that Gordon May Jr. later purchased and raised
his family. Alfred is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City, KS., next to other family members in
Acacia Lawn.
