| Injured Deaf Mute Recovering Lebanon, Ind. (Spl) — A 33-year-old deaf mute, who lost his voice in infancy and the use of his "talking hand" in a farm accident last August, is slowly making a courageous recovery in the Witham Memorial Hospital at Lebanon.
Dorris O. Hicks, Lebanon farmer, was pulled into a hay bailer on his 160-acre Boone County farm while trying to adjust the machine.
HIS RIGHT arm was broken in several places, the upper half of his body was covered with deep cuts and his left hand was severely cut.
To a deaf mute, the right hand is the means of communication and Hicks was unable to talk to his wife who also is a deaf mute.
HOWEVER, hospital attendants who say Hicks is one of the best patients they have ever had, is making swift progress learning to talk with his left hand. The left hand symbols are backward but Mr. And Mrs. Hicks are developing a system of communication that is working out well.
Mr. and Mrs. Hicks have three children, Dorrin, 8; Jerry, 4, and Janet Rose, 6 months, all of them able to speak and hear. |
