Mrs. Celia Andrist, 91, of 206 North Valley, Kansas City, died yesterday at Bethany hospital. She was the widow of Alfred E. Andrist. She had lived in Kansas City, Kansas, since 1912. When she was 4, she accompanied her parents from Ashtabula, O., to a homestead near Brookville, Kas. She taught in the Saline County, Kansas schools. She leaves five daughters, Mrs. Valrie Just, Martinez, Calif.; Mrs. Olive D. May and Mrs. Edith Frageman, both of 3301 Washington avenue, Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. Carrie M. Ross, Wichita, and Mrs. Edna E. Kerrick, 6914 Bellefontaine avenue; 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 7 to 9 o'clock tomorrow night at the Gibson chapel, Kansas City, Kansas. Celia Paul Andrist Headstone Notes - Celia rode a Mexican pony to school and had an experience with two rattle snakes. She was nearly thrown off
of her horse when he reared up and backed away from the snakes. A family member said that Celia lived in a
"dug-out." Celia told stories about how Indians would come around begging for food. Her brothers had to break
the land for farming without benefit of animals (a horse to pull the plow). They wore long underwear for
insulation from the hot sun. The brothers ran a Mill and granted too much credit and went broke. Celia was a
school teacher in Salina, KS. She taught at the Brookville school. A family member said that Alfred and Celia
had a child that died at birth. She and her husband ran a boarding house/restaurant that was frequented by the
railroad workers. Celia and Alfred moved to Kansas City, KS. in 1912. When she was elderly, she lived with
her grandson, Gordon and his family at 206 N. Valley, in Kansas City, KS. It was a large brick home with 4
bedrooms. Two bedrooms were furnished with a kitchens and rented out at times. In her diary, she wrote,
"Rented room for $7.00 - .25 on electricity, .50 on phone. That is $7.75 every Monday." Celia wrote in a diary
from 1937 to 1947. In the diary she wrote that she purchased coal for the furnace at 206 N Valley, Kansas City,
Kansas. She wrote, "I got 2 tons of grade a Paris coal. $16.31 per ton. " According to her diary, she ordered 2
tons of coal on Jan. 2nd and re-ordered another one ton on Feb. 20th. She noted that there was a possibility of a
coal strike and she was worried that she couldn't get coal for the winter. In her diary she wrote that she bought
bread from the "Manor" bread truck and she put her milk bottles out on the porch so the Milk Man would leave
more milk. In 1946, milk and bread were delivered to the house. Celia sold her house at 206 N. Valley to
Gordon May, her grandson. She wrote up an agreement with him to allow her to use her two upstairs rooms as
long as she lived. One room had a full kitchen. Celia always had time for her grandchildren. If you were hurt,
or just mad at the world she would put some Mentholadum (A medicated Vaseline) on your hurt to make you
feel better. Celia is buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Kansas City, KS., next to other family members in
Acacia Lawn.
Here are a few facts I learned about Celia after reading her diary from 1937,1946-47. She went to church every
Sunday and to her daughter, Olive's house for dinner after church. She was a Republican and she always voted.
She listened to the radio almost every night before bed and she listened to sporting events, like the world series.
She did not drive. She relied on her family to take her to church or she took a cab. Celia was a quiIter and
made hooked rugs. In her journal she wrote, "On July 25th 1874 about three o'clock in the afternoon the first
grasshoppers arrived in Kansas."

"Mrs. Andrist was born October 12. 1865 in Ashtabula. Ohio. and passed away at Bethany Hospital September
14.1957 at the age of 91 years.
When she was 4 years old she moved with her family to Brookville. Kansas. and settled on a homestead.
She was united in marriage to Alfred E. Andrist on April 22. 1889. To this union 8 children were born. Mr.
and Mrs. Andrist operated a hotel in Salina. KS., and Mrs. Andrist taught school in Salina County schools.
They moved to Kansas City. Kansas in 1912.
She is preceded in death by her husband Alfred and three children, Paul, May and Lola.
She is survived by 5 daughters, Valerie Just, Olive May, Edith Frageman, Carrie Ross. and Edna Kerrick.
Also by 17 grandchildren and 32 great -grandchildren.
She was a member of the Oliver Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church.
