      Obituary

Charles Luis Andrist was born at Langantahl, Canton of Berne, Switzerland, October 23, 1823. Died at Bavaria, Kansas, July 23, 1894.

In 1848 he came from Switzerland to America and settled in Alton, Ill. From there he removed to St. Louis, Mo. where in 1852 he married Miss Louisa Ritten, whom he now leaves to mourn his death.

in 1858 they both professed faith in Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which they have ever since been faithful members. During their married life they have lived in several different sections of the United States, until 1887, they came to Bavaria to make it their home.

The deceased has been suffering greatly for several months past with a lingering sickness. He left clear testimony of his trust in God and is gone to his rest above.

The funeral services were held at the Bavaria school house on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The bereaved wife and son have the sympathy of many friends.

      M.J. Mumford.

      Charles died of cancer.

    Notes
    • Charles filled out a declaration for pension form to receive his Civil War pension. On the form he is described
as being 5' 5 1/2" tall. fair complexion, with brown hair and blue eyes. The same form states that he was born
in Switzerland. (The 1860 census states that Charles was born in Germany.) Charles immigrated to the United
States when he was 27 years old. (See the attached declaration to become a citizen.) He landed in New York
City. New York. on or about August 10, 1848. The only ship that docked on August 10. 1848. was the
"Elsinore" ship from Liverpool. Charles names was not on the passenger list for the ship. I checked a few days
before the 10th and a few days after the 10th and I couldn't find his name on a ships record. According to a
letter written from a friend of the family, Charles and Louisa were living in Alton, Illinois. when they got
married and lived there until 1854. Charles Andrist's name was found on the 1860 Census for Macoupin
County. Illinois. He was 37 when the 1860 census was taken. He lived in the city of Carlinville. He is listed as
being a Jeweler. His real estate property is shown as being valued at $3000.00. and his personal property is
valued at $3000.00. Charles served his country during the Civil War. On May 12. 1864. he volunteered in the
Illinois Infantry. He enlisted as a Private in Springfield, Illinois. His infantry moved to Rock Island Barracks.
Ill., June 3. 1864, and they served as guards for prisoners of war until September 24. 1864. He served 5
months and he was honorable discharged on September 24, 1864. He was 40 years old at that time. Charles
migrated to Baveria. Kansas which is in Saline County. There is an un-dated grave in Bavaria with the name
      SGT C. L. Andrist, CO. F, 133RD ILL. INF.

It states on the 1860 Census that his birthplace is Germany, but the 1870 Census says Switzerland.
