Notes	"Roster of Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution Buried in Indiana." 1938 LCCCN 68-18632 CATT, PHILLIP Born—1750, in Virginia. Service—While residing at Brownsville, Penn., enlisted in 1776 or 77 in Capt. John Whitsell's CO., under Col. Brodhead in Penn. Troops. Established a station at mouth of Fishing Creek on the Ohio River and went out as a ranger from this station as far as the mouth of the Kanawha; served 6 mos. Returned to Brownsville and served on several tours against the Indians under Capts. Kincaid and Wilson. Enlisted in 1777 or 78 in Capt. Morgan's CO. In 1782, enlisted in Capt. Jacob Tevibaugh's CO., marched to Sandusky Plains, where he was in battle with Indians under Col. Crawford, in which the Americans were defeated and Col. Crawford taken a prisoner. Proof—Pension claim S. 16072. Died—1844. Buried West Salem Church Cemetery, Johnson Twp. Married—Sarah. Had five daughters according to will, but no names were given. Collected by Mrs. S. G. I wish I had listened more carefully and had more time to visit back in 1968 when I first visited in Knox/Gibson/Pike Cos., IN. There were several quite active researchers on the Catt family at that time and were extremely knowledgeable. Unfortunately, none of these ever published their material. Where it is today is not known to me. However, I do recall remarks being made that Scratch was used because Phillip couldn't read or right. Well, there is a document with an X on it. Considering the age of Phillip at that time, it may have been all he coud do to make the mark. Earlier, when he signed his pension application. He used PC as his mark. At that time he was about 82. I have found his brother George Catt could write. i have found his name in English as George Catt and in German script as Georg Katz. I did not pay as much attention as I should have to Michael and John's records. I imagine there are those that were signed. If anyone has such, I'd like to know if they used a mark or signed their name. I have never found Scratch in any of the records that pertain to Phillip Catt (1740-1844). I was somewhat shocked to see that Scratch was included on his government tombstone. It was done basically, I am sure, to distinguish him from the several other Phillip Catts. I have never used Scratch in referring to Phillip Catt (1740-1844). I recall hearing one lady talking about it and explaining that there were so many Phillip Catts that since the old one signed with an X, he had been dubbed Scratch. She was giggling and made it sound really funny. I later found out she wasn't even related. When there are several of the same name, we do use various methods of keeping them separate. I am afraid that Scratch was used so long by these folks, that a lot of people have come to believe that was the actual nickname of Phillip Catt (1740-1844). I'd like to see an effort made to use Phillip Catt without the misnomer. I like to think he turns over in his grave everytime someone uses that scratch. Cary
