Notes |
- Olive had a daughter. Janet Louise. that died a few days after birth.
Norman and his family gave Olive a Memory book to record her life stories. Some of the information in these
notes were taken from her book. Olive lived in a depot in Bavaria, Kansas as a child. The depot burned and
they moved to a farmhouse that her parents bought in 1903. Her father was a Station Agent for the Union
Pacific Rail Road. She attended a country school in Bavaria. Kansas. She sat with her brother, Paul, during
school. She said she got her first "paddling" when she turned up her grandmothers dress and said, "you don't
have any pants on"! Her grandmother gave her the spanking. When Olive lived in Salina, they lived on 12th
street. Her first pet was a horse she got when she was 8 years old. They always had a dog. She remembered
she was 15 years old when she had her first date. She never had a traffic ticket. Her first job was at Loose
Wiles Biscuit Co. In 1920. her father bought his first car. She said her dad had no patients. so a cook at the
school where her dad worked taught her to drive. She wrote that her favorite hobbies were digging in the
garden and furniture refinishing. She had malaria in 1946. and all of the child hood illnesses like measles.
mumps and chickenpox.
Her favorite TV star was Bob Barker. She loved the "Price is Right" TV show. She lives through WWI, WWII,
the Korean war, the war in Vietnam, and the "Cold War". Her favorite sport was baseball. She said the
Depression years, 1930's, were a struggle financially, but they came through it. The first President she voted
for was Calvin Coolidge. She was a Republican. When asked what political office she could have handled
better than a man she said "A member of the Supreme Court, when they voted out prayer in schools".
She wrote in her memory book that when she met her husband, she thought he was the most handsome man she
had ever seen. They went together from the night they met, from March to November in 1919. She said they
had some stormy times but there was enough love there to see them through. She never regretted any part of
her life with her husband Gordon.
She was married in Liberty. Mo. She said that "she lost her liberty in Liberty".
Olive described her occupation as a "Jack of all trades. master of none".
She had a restaurant in Kansas City. KS. The 1920 Census stated that her job was a cracker packer at a
Cracker Factory. Olive was the president of the American Legion axillary, Wyandotte unit No. 88. She and
her son Gordon worked together in a piano tuning and refinishing business. Olive restored pianos. She did
beautiful restoration work. After the death of her son Gordon. she moved to Edna. KS. with her sister. Edith.
