- Dorothy E. Webb, the third wife of drugstore tycoon James Earl "Doc" Webb, has died at age 71.
Mrs. Webb, who was married to the legendary entrepreneur for the last four years of his life, died Tuesday (March 2, 1999) at Edward White Hospital.
She had cancer, her daughter, Pamela A. James, of St. Petersburg, said Thursday.
A fountain worker at Webb's City for several years, she and Webb were married June 8, 1978, in Las Vegas.
"Doc" Webb, a 5-foot-5 dynamo from the mountains of Tennessee, arrived here in 1925 and created "The World's Most Unusual Drug Store," a retail empire on 10 downtown blocks. It was famed for its low prices - and for its dancing chicken and drum-beating duck. He died in 1982 at age 85.
His first marriage, to Marie Bowers, with whom he had two children, ended in divorce after 12 years. His second wife, the former Aretta Brooks, died in 1973.
Mrs. Webb, a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, moved with her family from her native Walkerton, Ind., to Tampa as a girl of 8 and soon moved again to St. Petersburg, her daughter said. Her first husband was George R. Ondriezek, a funeral director, who died in the early 1970s.
Survivors in addition to her daughter include two sons, Scott D. and Phillip K. Ondriezek, and a sister, Elpha Thompson, all of St. Petersburg; a brother, George Landen, Norfolk, Va.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center-Ninth Street Chapel, 2201 Dr. M.L. King St. N. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 401 Fifth St. N., with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 4801 86th Ave. N, Pinellas Park, FL 33782.
