    • History of Knox and Daviess Counties Page 80-81 (1886)

      Early Settlers.
Frederick mehl, or Mail, came to the county while it was in possession of the French and Indians. As the French and Indians fraternized he learned the French language as a matter of protection. He was from Philadelphia and obtained Donation 52, to which Isaac Mehl obtained a deed in 1797. Frederick Mehl was the father of Charles, Isaac, Solomon and Frederick all of whom have been identified with the development of the township. They have all been closely confined to agricultural pursuits.

George Catt, grandfather of J. Pm Catt, came from North Carolina to Virginia; thence to Knox County and settled on an old French claim, lying immediately east of Purcell Station. He came all the way from Virginia in a wagon bringing his family with him. George Catt, son of the former, was born about 1800, and settled on a portion of the land owned by his father. He was a ranger in time of the Indian war, but was not at the battle of Tippecanoe. He was a farmer and miller. Moses Catt, brother of George Catt, was never the owner of land, was somewhat given to bibulous habits. He lived in the "barrens" in the western part of the township. "Boss" Catt went to New Orleans and was lost sight of by his friends. Isaac Catt, brother of J. P. Catt, lived west of the railroad. He owned a small tract of land, but depended mainly on his gun for a living. He killed great numbers of deer and turkey. Other of the Catt brothers were Solomon and Hiram, the former died in Harrison Township; the latter is still living near the old farm of the grandfather.

Marker #21-31 : Lochry's Expedition, 1781 Interment Camp / Lochry's Militia Held here, 1781 Side A : "Lochry's Expedition, 1781 Interment Camp"Border warfare characterized the American Revolution on the northwest frontier. Between August 26 and September 15, 1781, sixty-four survivors of Lochry's Expedition were held captive by "Butler' s Rangers" (British-allied Indians led by George Girty) in a camp near this site. Colonel Archibald Lochry's battalion of Pennsylvania militia, part of a larger punitive expedition under General George Rogers Clark and traveling down the Ohio River behind the main force, was attacked by Girty's men ten miles downstream from the mouth of the Great Miami River near present-day Aurora , Indiana . Thirty-seven militiamen were killed in the August 24 battle, including Lochry, and the rest captured. Afterwards Rogers abandoned his objective of capturing British-held Detroit . The captives were taken to Detroit and eventually to Montreal . Tradition holds that fewer than twenty of Lochry's battalion ever returned to their homes. Military 1777  Virginia, USA Find all individuals with events at this location
    • John Catt was a private in James Sullivan's Company, of the 13th Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Wm. Russell during the year 1777. He is listed on a morning report of Capt. Sullivan's Company, 13th Virginia Battalion stationed at Ft. Pitt, 17 March 1778. The 13th Virginia was the second regiment to be raised by Col. Crawford and was generally known as the "West Augusta Regiment." It was over 500 strong. It was raised to serve on the western border in the event of Indian trouble, but if no trouble, to go where ever needed. It served entirely in the West, doing duty at Ft. Pitt and Ft. McIntosh and along the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers. Col. William Crawford lived on the site of New Haven, opposite Connellsville, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, on the Youghiogheny River. In 1778 he had a command at Ft. Pitt. In 1782, he commanded the Sandusky expedition. He was captured and burned at the stake 11 June 1782. According to Phillip Catt's pension claims, he served in the Sandusky campaign with Col. Crawford. The 14 August 1781, roll of Michael Catt's Company. Volunteer Regiment, command of Col. Zackquille Morgan, Western frontier Expedition shows Michael Catt, Captain, and John Catt, joined 28 June 1781, under Command of Brigadier General George Rogers Clark. Lt. Col. Archibald Lochary was killed by Mohawk Indians, August 1781. Prisoner of Indians from Lt. Baker's Company were John Catt, Jacob Franks, Abraham Highley, Val Lawrence and George Mason. this group had missed connections with General Clark and was ambushed on the Indiana side below Louisville above the Indiana and Kentucky line. John Catt was taken prisoner on the Miami River, Ohio, 24 August 1781. He was released at Ft. Ticonderoga 18 July 1783. His age was given as 24. John and Michael Catt appear in German Twp., Fayette County, Pennsylvania on the 1790 census, John has 4 children (3 sons, 1 dau.) , Michael has 6 children (4 sons, 2 dau.) They next appear on the August 25, 1800 Tax list for Mason County, Kentucky. Michael Catt Jr. is also listed as a Tax payer. By Sept 1801 John had returned to Fayette County and later his sons George and John appear in the 1806 muster of the Columbiana County, Ohio militia. He bought land in Unity Twp. in 1808 from his father-in-law John Mason. It is assumed at this time that John Catt Sr. died in Columbiana County, Ohio prior to 1809. His wife inherited 100 acres from her father in Hanover Twp., Columbiana County in 1809, there was no mention of John in the will. She is listed on the 1820 census with 2 sons ages 16-26 most likely Solomon and Samuel.
