    • Edmond Polk was the second son (and third child) of Charles Polk the Indian Trader.

      Edmund POLK . was born 1740 in (Prince Georges' County) now Frederick Co, MD. He grew up in Maryland, migrated first to Kentucky and then on to Pennsylvia where he met and married Mary Fultz in 1765 at Fort Pitt, Allegheny Co. Pennsylvania.

      Associated Ancestor (Revolutionary) Records:
      Edmund served as a Major and Second in command of the Fourth Battalion, Washington County, PN in the American Revolutionary War, serving on the Rangers on the Frontier, Militia. (PA ARCH, 5th SER, Vol 4, P 417). His National Service # is 561300. City: Fort Pitt Vicinity, PN. County: Washington Co, State: Pennsylvia. His ancestor number for the National Society of the Daughters' of the American Revolution is A090150. (See the Dictionary of American Biography, Volume VIII, page 61.)

      In the book 'American Guthries and Allied Families', page 441 tells us that "Edmond Polk was remarkable for his integrity and piety, as well as his handsome person." Until he, his wife and children made the trip to Kentucky by flatboat via the Ohio River, he lived in Washington County, PN on Cross Creek. Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Volume III, page 527 show Edmund owning 800 acres.

      In the Spring of 1780, his family, brothers and their sister descended the Ohio River landing at the Falls of the Ohio what is now Louisville, Kentucky. After a short stay, they moved on to what is now Shelby, Spencer and Nelson Counties. Edmond Polk was appointed to a committee to report on the work of building a debtor's prison, a prison for criminals, a whipping post, pillory and stocks. In 1875 three of his sons left Kentucky for Indiana. By the time of Edmond Sr.'s death, the only children still living in Nelson County were his son James, his daughter Sarah Fowler, and the two unmarried daughters, Mary and Nancy.

      Edmond Polke Sr. died prior to May 9, 1825 in Bullitt Co, KY. (Smithville). His grave has never been definitely located.

      His will is recorded in Nelson County, KY, Will Book E, Page 285. In his will, he left his 160 acre farm to his wife Mary Polke.

      They had the following children: Thomas, Reverend Charles, Edmond Jr., Hannah, Christina Katherine, Sarah, Mary (Polly), Nancy and James.
